SmartMIB Professional Solution:

Network Element’s Performance Management

(SM-Pro- Performance)

(SM-ProUpd-Performance)

(SM-ProPlus- Performance)

Solution Introduction & Details Overview:

This solution presentation focuses on Performance Management. It is based in turn on gathering device’s resources and events related details and statistics capabilities built into the operating systems of all router network devices which are essential in managing telecoms, service provider, and small to large enterprise networks.

It introduces a SOSL based management script to build a management process to monitor Performance using the SNMP Protocol as an interface to retrieve/poll Performance related data and statistics.

The goal of Performance Management is to address the accessibility and quality of services as well as the efficiency with which this is accomplished. The Performance Management Process deployment should be to measure, detect, diagnose, plan, and initiate action in order to ensure accessibility, quality, and the efficiency of service delivery.

Performance Management is enhanced by the use of certain measurement points that when associated with other collected data; serves as performance indicators on the overall Network quality and efficiency of service delivery. Such measurements points are network throughput and link utilization.

To achieve the goal of the Performance Management process; performance related data should be collected first and then baselined according to the particular network’s conditions to establish a normalized performance parameters. Using this later to determine thresholds of acceptable performance levels and report any deviations from those levels.

General Performance Management Process Data Characteristics

The following table describes data that can be applied to the Performance  management process.

Data

Description

Buffer memory related data

Information that reports on the managed device’s buffer memory allocation and creation failures.

Memory Pool monitoring

related data

Information that reports on different memory pools usage as well as the per process Memory usage statistics.

CPU usage statistics related data

Information that reports on total average CPU usage as well as the per process CPU usage statistics.

Interface related error data

Information that reports on the number of Carrier transitions, collisions, Output as well as Input queue drops, and resets seen on the particular interface.

Environment related data and information

Information that reports on the fans, power supplies, temperature, and voltage states.
