Multicast and Broadcast Packet Ratios
(SM-SmallSol005)
Solution Introduction:
This Small management solution provides an application that learns and then targets specific network interfaces per type and polls then calculates higher level maintenance type statistics, namely the interfaces link percent Utilization for both the inbound and the outbound traffic loads.
This Small management solution addresses the issue of scalability of network management interface link traffic statistics. It controls the type and the amount of traffic managing network interface resources and services without exhausting or compromising those very network resources, services.
The main goal of the management process is to specifically collect traffic statistics ‘per traffic type’ and calculate link utilizations to create a ‘per traffic type’ ratios to be used later to extract the ‘per traffic type’ component of the calculated interface utilizations. In doing so it differentiates between three types of utilization component calculations: Unicast, Multicast, and Broadcast components.
The solution presentation is based on the MIB-II which in turn is based on the IETF standard MIBs RFC1213, RFC2863, and RFC2233.
