ATM Type Interface
Statistics
(Utilization & Throughput)
(SM-SmallSol0036)
Solution Introduction:
This Small management solution provides an application that learns and then targets specific network interfaces per type and polls then calculates higher level maintenance type statistics, namely the interfaces link percent Utilization and Link Throughput (in Kbps) for both the inbound and the outbound traffic loads and for the inbound and the outbound Data loads.
This Small management solution addresses the issue of scalability of network management interface link traffic statistics. It controls the type and the amount of traffic managing network interface resources and services without exhausting or compromising those very network resources, services.
The main goal of the management process is to specifically calculate link utilization and link Throughput. In doing so it differentiates between two types of utilization calculations: Traffic and Data utilization calculation. The differentiator between the two is whether the traffic overhead is integrated (accounted for) in the calculation formulas. For ATM serial interfaces the traffic overhead is 12 bits per ATM cell packet.
The solution presentation is based
on the MIB-II which in turn is based on the IETF standard MIB RFC1213 which
includes the objects necessary to maintain the interface statistics.
