SOS stands for “SNMP Operating System” Language.
SOS Language (or simply SOSL) is a ‘Management Scripting Language’ used to write ‘Management Scripts’ with each management script representing a set of instructions written in an executable non-native high-level language code which implements a management function.
The introduction of SOSL was designed to enable Network Administrators to Understand, Drive, and Custom fit the under laying Management Processes to their prospective Networks in accordance to their own (maybe) unique and changing Management Requirements and/or Policies. SOSL could then be used to build Intelligent Solutions based on Event-Driven Management combined with Result-Driven Management Solutions.
The Management Scripts defines a standard interface for the delegation of specific management functions in accordance to the Internet management framework. In particular, it provides the following capabilities:

Network Logical Grouping/segmentation that is layered/structured across services as well as managed elements with Administrator configurable managed zones.
Management Policy Provisioning where different Policies provisioning per logical subset of managed elements and/or topologies could be applied.
Network Service Accounting structured on either: Usage-, content-, and/or quality-based.
Network Services Provisioning Structured and Configurable either Manually or Dynamically automated.
User Roles that are Application plus Network Zoning and logical grouping based with Application Users have control over both the management processes and the information being managed.
It suffices to say SOSL is easy to understand, use, and to modify once the fundamentals of Network Management technology and the SNMP Protocol are grasped. It is important to emphasize however that you don’t have to be a Network management and SNMP Protocol EXPERT to understand, run, modify, or debug Management Processes scripts.
