This section gives the details on the resources that need to be setup and/or be available before installing any of the SmartMIB Small solutions application suites.
SmartMIB Version 1.5 requirements:
MS Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server.
MS SQL Server 2000 or MS Data Engine (MSDE).
Minimum Pentium 4, 1 GB of RAM, and the same for paging space.
The memory requirements could vary according to the number of managed elements. Check the SmartMIB Installation Pre-requisites.

You are now ready to use MSDE as your database.
To start the SQL Server Service after the installation; go to Programs > Startup > Service Manager and click on start as shown below;

Installing SmartMIB Small Solution Software
After insuring that the installation pre-requisites are all met; its possible to proceed with the install of the SmartMIB Small Solution application following the steps below. It is however advisable to following instructions which should be read before downloading evaluation versions of our SmartMIB small solutions. To read the instructions click here.
Step (1)
Insert the SmartMIB CD into the Server’s CD-ROM drive; then start the Setup.exe under the SmartMIB version and the Setup directories.

If no CD is ordered and instead the solution is downloaded from the web; then unzip the file and extract the contents in a temporary directory. Run the Setup.exe file.
The install process will then follow identically the rest of the steps listed on Installation of the Server Software.
Running SmartMIB Configuration Utility
After insuring that the installation is complete; the user should Start the SmartMIB Configuration utility from Start > Programs > SmartMIB.

The user then should enter the following SmartMIB Configuration data:
SQL Server Name:
As the phrase implies; this is the SQL Server name as configured on the
User Name & Password:
This is the SQL Server User name and associated password.

After entering the information above; the user should click on the 'Apply' button first before Creating the Database by clicking on the 'Create Database' button. This creates the default database that contains all the default system settings necessary for the application to run.
It is important to note that if the user doesn’t run the SmartMIB Configuration utility; the system will run it automatically before the first login if the database default values are not instantiated.
The user should also run the
SmartMIB
Configuration utility to Create the Database (or actually to recreate the
database) and start a fresh scheme using the original database settings.
Creating the database; the system will Warn
the user requesting a confirmation of the action.

The system will then launch
another warning informing the user of the existence of the database. This is a
valid warning in fact if this is not a first time installation. If however this
is a first time installation then the user should ignore it and always click
‘yes’ as this is a temporary database and not the one containing all the
database default values necessary to jump start the application.

After
the system has finished the new database creation; it will generate an
information type of message stating that the database creation was successful.

Finally the ‘Reset Administrator Password’ button is used –as the name clearly indicates- for resetting the Administrator password upon the loss of the password. Its important to note here that there is no password set for the first time installation.
Installing the SmartMIB Solution’s Incremental Package
After insuring that the master
engine and database installations are complete; the user should install the SmartMIB solution incremental upgrade package. After downloading
the incremental upgrade package; the user should extract the files in a
temporary directory and then run the SMUpgrade.exe as shown below:
To start the actual incremental
upgrade; the user should click on ‘Start’. The upgrade process will then
populate the database with the solution’s specific parameters and data
settings.
After the process has finished updating the database; it will generate an information type of message stating that the solution upgrade finished successfully and the Upgrade Process could be closed.
The User could now login and verify the installation as is documented in Logging into SmartMIB and Verifying the Installation and according to the particular Small Solution installed.
